Randy by name, randy by nature.
A Casanova rodent has doubled the population of Hatton Adventure World’s Guinea Pig Village after breaking into the female enclosure.
Staff at the family farm park couldn’t understand why they suddenly had 100 pregnant guinea pigs on their hands – until they realised one male, now named Randy, had managed to escape his pen and infiltrate the female-only enclosure. The rampant rodent, who had lost a little weight through his busy exploits, is now set to become a father to around 400 babies in the coming weeks.
Richard Craddock, manager of the Adventure World, said: “We’re expecting a baby boom but the Guinea Pig Village is huge.
“The first we noticed was when we saw the pregnant guinea pigs.
“One of our male guinea pigs managed to find his way into the female enclosure. We suspect a child may have placed him back in the wrong pen by accident. We believe that the newly-named Randy could have impregnated up to 100 female guinea pigs, which have litters of about four, so if you do the maths we could be expecting quite a baby boom!”
The Guinea Pig Village, where children can cuddle a guinea pig or just watch them going about, is an impressive micro village which is home to around 300 guinea pigs and is a farmyard favourite at the popular tourist attraction.
In the next few weeks the population could swell to around 700.
