SHIRLEY may have missed out on super shopper Mary Portas's government funding scheme earlier this year but it can now celebrate after learning it has instead been awarded a cash boost of £10,000.
Following applications by local MPs, over 300 Town Teams including Shirley, have signed up to become Town Team Partners, and will benefit from a package of support which includes help from the Government as well as advice and support from leading retail experts.
Shirley Town Centre Partnership submitted an application for the grant along with other centres which had missed out on the initiative, with backing from local MP Lorely Burt.
Jim Ferry, Shirley Town Centre Partnership Chairman said: "With the news that £10,000 is coming our way, it means that our vision and ideas will now become a reality and we can really begin to support our businesses in the Town Centre.
"It is a really exciting time and we will spend the money wisely.
"It would be nice to have more businesses involved in the Partnership so they can share their ideas and help to move the High Street forward.
"The next step will be to discuss our ideas with the rest of the Town before developing the plan further.
"We already organise a series of networking events, clean up days, marketing and promotions, fund raise for the Christmas lights and organise a number events to help and support Shirley. The new ideas will complement this further."
