AMBITIOUS plans to redevelop the CTC Kingshurst Academy are already well underway.
As part of the £10.5?million scheme, a new four-storey teaching block will be erected at the Cooks Lane site. Existing buildings will also be renovated.
Derek Robinson, vice principal, said: “This is a great opportunity for us to boost the facilities and the performance of students.
“It’s our aim to make the new building future-proof. You can never quite tell in education – particularly ICT – what changes are on the way, but we want to create facilities which are going to last.”
The new building will house an information centre, study rooms and classrooms for several different subjects. A single-story training block will also be created as part of the redesign.
Construction firm ISG has secured the contract for the redevelopment and will be carrying out refurbishment work over the summer holidays. The project as a whole is expected to be finished by the end of 2010.
The CTC opened its doors in 1988 and last year became an academy. It remains outside the local government remit and instead receives funding direct from central government.
The redevelopment will form part of wider changes at the college – which has chosen to specialise in technology and visual arts.
