“You can kill someone with your driving and get a minor fine- that’s no deterrent. Compared with the loss of the family, these sentences are laughable,” said spokeswoman Rhia Weston.

Road safety charity Brake wants 20mph limits to be implemented in built-up areas and drivers to go 20mph even where the 30 limit remains.

Spokesman Martin Howard said: “Everyone in the West Midlands should be able to walk and cycle in their community without fear or threat. It’s a basic right, and this is about defending that.”
