A tough time for Geraint

WHILE most of us were relaxing and eating chocolate over Easter, one plucky Balsall Common runner was setting out on the ‘toughest race on earth’.

WHILE most of us were relaxing and eating chocolate over Easter, one plucky Balsall Common runner was setting out on the ‘toughest race on earth’.

Geraint Evans was taking part in the 25th Marathon des Sables - a 150 mile ‘ultra marathon’ across the Sahara desert in Morocco.

The gruelling event is equivalent to running five marathons in five days, all in temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius. All 800 competitors also had to carry their own kit and water.

Geraint, who is raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, said: “I’m not sure where the original idea came from, but when I heard about the event there was a bit of me that thought the challenge would be exciting!”
