HOW saddened I was to see on the front cover of your paper last week that Alf Miller had passed away.
Over the last few years I always looked for him when in the town centre, and invariably he was either sitting on a bench in the High Street, or if the weather was inclement on a comfy seat in Touchwood, just watching the world go by.
I have spent many happy times chatting to him and hearing about his wartime exploits.
One year I took some photos of him by the war memorial and let him have copies, which I know he always carried about with him, among his other mementos.
Alf truly was a gentleman of ‘the old school’, a hero and a local character, who will be sadly missed by many, myself included. Goodbye and rest in peace my old soldier friend.
