A CENTURY ago Roald Amundsen announced the discovery of the South Pole.
Ada Harris was born that very same year and on Tuesday the centenarian marked her 100th birthday with a party at the Kingsford Court retirement complex in Ulleries Road.
Son Ken Harris, aged 77, said the secret to his mother’s longevity was a hearty appetite.
“She has always been slim but she enjoys her food - every morning she has a bacon and egg sandwich!”
She also enjoyed ballroom dancing until recently as well as bingo and playing whist.
Ada was married to husband Arthur until his death many years ago - Ken was their only son.
The family moved to the United States in 1950, returning in 1954 and buying a home in Sheldon.
