Alarm at change in opening hours

Residents in Elmdon and Sheldon have raised objections to late evening opening at a new shopping parade

Residents have raised objections to late evening opening at a new shopping parade.

Five shops are to be built next to a new Morrisons supermarket, currently under construction on Coventry Road close to Elmdon and Sheldon.

Planning permission was initially granted for the shops to open only from 9am to 6pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Developer Chase Midland Estates now wants to extend that to 7am to 11pm weekdays and 9am to 8pm Sundays.

Ten residents living behind the former Severn Trent site have raised objections over concerns of late night noise from the shops.

And it's not the first time the retail scheme has caused controversy; concerns about the location of a service road were raised back in January.

Borough councillor Jean Hamilton (Lib Dem, Elmdon) argued at the time that there would be an impact on people living in nearby Old Lode Lane and Valley Road.

* The opening hours were due be decided at Birmingham City Councils former planning committee last night (Thursday).
