A SHIRLEY couple are celebrating after their son won more medals at the Special Olympics.

Alex Hickman came away with a silver medal in the breast stroke and a bronze for the backstroke.

The games were held last month in Leicester and mum Elaine, dad Dave and brother Ryan were all there to see the 20 year-old former pupil of Hazeloak School make a real splash.

“He’s been swimming since he was 12 and absolutely loved it,” said a proud Elaine.

“He trains every Thursday at Chelmsley Wood bath and wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Over 2,600 competitors from all over the UK - with over 300 competing for the West Midlands alone - took part in the games.

“It was a marvellous occasion with the opening ceremony alone being a wonderful experience,” said Elaine.

“The Solihull team achieved an overall total of four gold medals, five silver and one bronze - well done to them you all,” she added.
