ALFRED Horton from Ilshaw Heath clocked up his century last week.
Alf, who was married to Mary for 64 years and is a keen gardener was surprised at reaching the grand old age of 100.
"After the last few years I've had, its just been a dream to reach it. I never thought I would live to 100, when I was younger I thought 70 was the limit."
Speaking about his memories of the war, he said: "I wasn't tough enough for the military and was given the option of joining the army or gardening. So I chose gardening because it was something I was good at."
Alf celebrated his birthday with an open house party with family and friends.
His god daughter Pat O'Hare said: "It is wonderful that he has reached 100 years of age, he remains in good health, it's absolutely marvellous."
Alf, who has spent most of his life living between Ilshaw Heath and Tanworth-in-Arden has a son, Michael, 70 who lives in Devon and two grand daughters- Tracy and Julie.
