All together now

I RETURNED to the UK from America to discover that nationally we had a coalition running the country and it was already rocked by a new expenses scandal.

I RETURNED to the UK from America to discover that nationally we had a coalition running the country and it was already rocked by a new expenses scandal.

I then picked up the Solihull News to discover that locally we also had a coalition, the leader of which has only been a councillor since 2004 and one of the new cabinet members had only literally just been elected with no experience of Solihull Council at all.

As a tax payer both of these worry me immensely. I’m not enamoured at the thought of something akin to the Morecambe and Wise show in No 10 and something resembling Play School in our civic suite spending my hard earned taxes.

The alternative nationally, of course, was a Labour Government which had destroyed the country and locally a Conservative administration which clearly did not have the trust of the local people at the ballot box. Still, democracy is a great thing, so we’re told.

Undemocratic

I would like to thank the 3,660 people who voted Conservative for Knowle and Chadwick End in the local elections. Also the Rt Hon Caroline Spelman MP who had a massive Conservative vote and this undoubtly reflected on mine!

We are a team and will always work towards the best interests of our residents.

At the annual council the Conservative group were pushed into opposition even though we are the largest group, by the Labour and Liberal Alliance who have taken control of the borough council....what happened to the national coalition position?

We recognised we didn’t have an overall majority and made efforts to open discussions with the Lib Dems as the next largest party, intent on forming an alliance in the best interests of the people of Solihull.

I think this is a very undemocratic situation but along with my Conservative colleagues will work for the betterment of the borough

We’re watching

It would seem Meriden MP Caroline Spelman may have a Conflict of Interest problem with her new position in the Lib/Con Government.

juliet@sunlight-cop.org.uk have written to the Permanent Secretary of State of the Dept for Food & Rural Affairs of which Caroline is Secretary of State as Caroline. with her husband own a lobbying biotechnology company which is registered at their home.

Sunlight is a Centre for Open Politics and like The Taxpayers Alliance rightly questions Government appointments etc
