FOOLHARDY thieves caused £40,000 worth of damage when they torched a barge on the Shirley canal network.
The narrowboat, moored near the Drawbridge pub, was set alight a little after midnight on January 19.
The culprits broke into the 62ft barge, and set fire to a mattress inside; the flames destroyed the interior of the boat.
Owners have reported several items stolen, including a suitcase generator, worth £600, and a security box, containing 24 sovereign coins.
It’s thought the thieves would have used a vehicle to make their get-away because of the weight of the stolen objects.
Anyone with information should call PC Andy Freeman, from West Mercia Police, on 0300 333 3000, quoting incident 11-s-190112.
