DO I detect a note of realism and common sense in Councillor Meeson’s latest letter (News, July 17) concerning the Shirley redevelopment saga?
He appears to suggest that allowing Asda to develop their store on the Powergen site is once again on the table. Accepting that an Asda store appears unavoidable, surely this is the least damaging option?
Although our councillors may have the legal right to sell off parkland, morally they do not, as it belongs to the people. By allowing Asda to go ahead on the Powergen site, it would obviate the need to take any parkland, and would finally rid Shirley of an eyesore.
As the council appears to have no idea what to do with the Powergen site anyway, wouldn’t this now be the best solution?
