A LOCAL vet has praised the healing power of pets after witnessing the effect of one canine companion on his autistic owner.

Matthew Boyce, aged 14, from Shirley, was shy and reluctant to talk before his parents bought him Rosie as an assistance dog.

The family had researched methods to support the teenager but they had no idea the arrival of Rosie would have such a profound effect on him.

The retriever was a customer of the YourVets clinic in Wythall where staff learned of the teenager’s heart-warming story.

Matthew’s mum Becky, said: “Matthew would never interact with people he didn’t know before Rosie arrived so I expected to have to answer for him when curious dog-lovers asked questions. I was astounded when Matthew confidently piped up to tell people all about Rosie - it was a true transformation.

“The whole family is amazed by his chattiness and it’s been wonderful to witness such a change. We are so grateful to Rosie for bringing Matthew out of his shell.”
