FIVE local community organisations stand to benefit after their members volunteered as ‘Santa’s big helpers’ over the festive period.

Supporting Balsall Common Lions Club’s Santa float earned £300 each for Balsall & Berkswell Hornets FC, Balsall Common Scouts, Berkswell Cricket Club, Berkswell & Balsall Rugby FC and the Coventry Phoenix Lions club.

Volunteers from each organisation joined the local Lions as they accompanied Santa in an extended eight evening tour round the area last Christmas.

Speaking following the official presentation of the funds, Steve Tidy - chairman of the Hornets FC - said: “I want to thank the Lions for their kind donation. As with all the other organisations, we have plans for the money and look forward to spending it in the community.”

Balsall Common Lions President Marie-Louise Marsden said: “Having volunteers from the five groups meant that we could extend our traditional float tour and bring Santa to more families over Christmas.”
