Bells ring out for thieves in Solihull

SOLIHULL Police is taking a festive approach to crime prevention this year by handing out free jingle bells to shoppers.

SOLIHULL Police is taking a festive approach to crime prevention this year by handing out free jingle bells to shoppers.

The bells can be attached to a purse or wallet so that if disturbed in a pocket or handbag, their jingle alerts the shopper to a would-be thief.

Officers are also providing free purse lanyards which attach the purse to a handbag, making it more difficult to remove without detection.

The bells and lanyards are available to members of the public from police station front offices at Solihull, Chelmsley Wood and Shirley.

Officers will also hand them out at local beat surgeries and hit shops and supermarkets in the area over the next two weeks.

Sergeant Ann Strachan, from Solihull’s Partnerships Team, said: “We are fortunate in Solihull to have comparatively low levels of theft, especially with the high volume of shoppers at this time of year.

“However, we still need to safeguard our personal items and the jingle bells and purse lanyards are a good way to make you aware of someone attempting to steal your valuables.

“Christmas is a busy time of year and with many more people out shopping, thieves have more opportunities to steal. Don’t give them the chance – keep your bag or wallet close and your valuables even closer.”
