Benefit night for courageous Billie Fulford

ST Patrick's Day might fall in March but hundreds are expected at an event taking place this weekend which aims to capture the celebratory spirit of the Irish patron saint's feast day.

MORE than £3,000 is thought to have been raised at a benefit night to help a youngster who lost her leg after suffering bone cancer.

The St Patrick's Extravaganza was held on Sunday night at Scanlon's Private Members Club in Acocks Green to raise funds to buy a state of the art prosthetic leg for brave Billie Fulford.

The event, which included a whole host of entertainment,  was organised by Billie's dad Michael Fulford and her step-mum Esther Cullen.The couple are now approaching the half-way mark of an ambitious target to raise £43,000 to buy 13-year-old Billie a special prosthetic leg from the USA.

Michael said: "I would like to thank everyone for making the event so successful, partiocularly in these difficult economic times when money is tight.

"The special prosthetic leg, which Billie could be fitted for when she is 17,  would enable her to live life to the full and enjoy her adulthood, as her childhood has thrown more at her than any of us could expect to have in a lifetime.

"Billie is now back at St Thomas Aquinas School full time and her mobility is improving.

"She is walking a few steps at a time with the aid of her crutches and thankfully is looking the picture of health.

Esther added: "Billie is turning into a lovely young lady and deserves only the best for her future."

Scanlon's club was the seting for Sunday's event as Billie was a promising young Irish dancer for the Scanlon School of Irish Dancing.

Dancers from the award-winning school performed an extract Lord of the Dance at the event and there was music from Norfolk & Good and The Holy Show Band.

Two raffles saw scores of fabulous prizes wone, including a holiday to Tenerife and mountain bikes.
