DIRECTORS at Birmingham Airport have given the go-ahead for the long-discussed runway extension.
Solihull Council had given planning permission four years ago, but bosses met last night (Wednesday) to discuss the financial situation.
The scheme has been hailed as major shot-in-the-arm for the region's economy, allowing long haul flights to the likes of China and the West Coast of America.
But green campaigners have said that the development will cause more pollution.
Chris Crean, from West Midlands Friends of the Earth, said: "The aviation industry needs reigning in and it has to start to pay its fair share for the damage it causes locally and globally."
