A SHIRLEY blood donor, who has rolled up his sleeve 100 times, has been honoured at a recent awards ceremony.

Charles Dempsey was handed a crystal decanter, after giving away pints of the red-stuff.

He was presented with the award at Hogarths Hotel, by Nadine Simpson – who suffers with Sickle Cell Anaemia.

Because of her condition, she requires regular blood transfusions, and relies on the generosity of donors like Charles.

While he admits that the “free tea and biscuits” were what got him started, Charles like the sense of helping others.

If you’re over 17, weigh more than 50kg, and are in good health, then you can become a donor.

Appointments are available from the National Blood Service on 0300 123 23 23.
