Blooms Solihull offers allotments to gardeners

PEOPLE wanting to help the environment are being invited to rent out new Grow Your Own (GYO) plots at a garden centre at Blooms Solihull Garden Centre on Kenilworth Road near Hampton-in-Arden.

The centre has opened 44 plots for people wishing to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

Manager of the garden centre, Simon Millar said: “Growing your own fruit and vegetables dramatically reduces your food’s carbon footprint, as it is grown nearby and won’t have travelled hundreds, perhaps thousands of miles.

“Not only will your food have little or no food miles, but it won’t be responsible for releasing harmful emissions into the atmosphere via exhaust fumes from cars, ships and planes.

“The food you grow is also less likely to have involved the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, which harm the environment and can interfere with the eating patterns of wildlife.”

People interested in renting a plot at Blooms Solihull Garden Centre can call the garden centre on 01675 442 866 or pick up an application form at one of the tills.

Simon added: “Home-grown produce also tastes better and is healthier for you than the fruit and vegetables you buy.

“We hope lots of people get in touch as it’s such a fantastic opportunity particularly for anyone who doesn’t have space to grow their own fruit and vegetables.”

Each plot at Blooms Solihull Garden Centre is approximately 90 square metres. A basic plot, which costs £5 per week, includes a composter and access to a water trough.

Alternatively, people can have a site that includes a greenhouse and a shed, as well as a water butt to help with water capture and conservation, for £10 per week. Half of the plots have a greenhouse and shed, however, these can be provided for any site.

The whole site is rabbit-proofed and benefits from all the facilities available at the garden centre, including toilets and the restaurant. Plot holders will also receive a starter kit containing a selection of Gardman products worth £15.
