BLUE/Orange may tackle two of society’s biggest taboos - race and mental health - but it is what makes us human that lies at its heart.

Christopher (Oliver Wilson) has been locked up in a mental institution after behaving ‘oddly’ in a London market.

Christopher (Oliver Wilson) has been locked up in a mental institution after behaving ‘oddly’ in a London market. Tomorrow he must be sent home to his impoverished housing estate, or be declared schizophrenic and re-sectioned.

His doctor Bruce (Gerard McCarthy) is convinced Christopher must stay, his boss Robert (Robert Bathurst) feels he must be released into the community.

Even by its conclusion, we’re not sure whether the right decision has been made for Christopher, and we’re left questioning exactly what real madness is. The play’s wincingly honest themes could make it an uncomfortable watch, yet thanks to the stellar cast, it is a compelling battle of wits, and unexpectedly funny.

Blue/Orange is at New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham until October 27.
