UNEMPLOYMENT in Solihull has more than doubled during the past 12 months.
The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that 5,285 people are claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance (JSA). Just a year ago, the number of Silhillians on the dole was 2,577.
The amount of people claiming JSA (4.4 per cent) is slightly higher than the national average (4.1 per cent), but less than the figure for the West Midlands as a whole (5.4 per cent).
More than half the claimants are men and - as is the case in many places - younger people continue to suffer.
As the recession bites, the West Midlands has suffered more than any other region. There was a 10.3 per cent rise in unemployment in the three months to May.
