A call for action on traffic chaos

AN URGENT meeting was held last week to discuss the escalating parking problems in Marston Green.

AN URGENT meeting was held last week to discuss the escalating parking problems in Marston Green.

Councillor Bob Sleigh (Con, Bickenhill) said cars were causing difficulties across the village and a solution needed to be found.

He said that the situation had got worse since parking charges were introduced at the Marston Green Tavern.

“We’ve got problems with refuse vehicles getting down the road and there are obviously concerns about ambulances and fire engines,” he said.

“Cars are now parking on both sides of the road and there are serious issues in Elmdon Road, Elmdon Lane and Chelmsley Road. The meeting with police officers, the residents’ association and Bickenhill Parish Council was organised to discuss solutions.

“I think this needs to be looked at as a matter of urgency by Solihull Council,” said Coun Sleigh.

The local authority published a list of the roads which have been listed as priorities for parking restrictions.with many of the streets identified as having problems being used by parents dropping off and collecting their children.

Drivers using railway stations or visiting locals shops are also causing congestion in many suburbs.

Concerns were raised at the transport and highways meeting that some streets were not higher up the list.

Among them were Wagon Lane, in Lyndon, beset by commuter parking, and the Warwick Road, in Knowle.

But with swingeing cuts on the way, even the roads at the top of the pile have no guarantee that restrictions will go-ahead.

Top priorities for parking restrictions are:-

1. Cornyx Lane, Moat Lane, Yew Tree Lane, Damson Lane, Wherretts Well Lane, Newfield Close - Silhill

2. Camden Close and Chester Road - Castle Bromwich.

3. Union Road - Shirley South

4. Rowood Drive - Elmdon

5. Tythe Barn Lane - Blythe
