A FAMILY-run card shop has been named as a finalist in the Oscars of the greetings and gift shop industry.
Special Occasions in Chester Road, Castle Bromwich, received their first ever nomination anonymously for the Retas, celebrating independent greeting card and gift shops.
“To be one of five finalists throughout Wales and the Midlands area... this really is something to shout about and proves that independents can still hold their own even at this challenging economic time,” said Emma Gillett, who joined her mum Pauline in running the store five years ago.
“It is a great honour just to be nominated but we’re so excited to be named a finalist. It would be absolutely brilliant if we won. Being self employed you can only really pat your own back so it’s great to get such recognition.”
With Clinton Cards going into administration, and numerous independents falling by the wayside, Emma said the key to Special Occasions’ success was their customer focus.
“Customers are our number one priority. We bend over backwards to try and help people, nothing is too much trouble. We just work very hard and it seems to be paying off.”
Pauline and Emma will find out if they have won the prestigious award at a glamorous event, held by Progressive Greetings magazine, on Wednesday July 11 at the Dorchester Hotel in London. The ceremony will be attended by almost 400 people.
