Carnival’s in need of heroes and villains

PREPARATIONS are already well under way for this year’s Shirley Lions Carnival, in Shirley Park, on Saturday, July 11, which promises to be the biggest – and best – yet, with a host of arena and audience participation events being planned for the public of Shirley.

Carnival chairman, Lion Martin Conlon said: “Over the 30 years the Lions have been organising the carnival, it’s become an increasingly important event on the community’s calendar, and the Lions were always looking for new attractions to appear at the carnival.

This year we have been very fortunate in securing the Period Fencer’s Guild whose knights will be engaging in medieval sword fighting.

“Thanks to the generosity of the main sponsors, the Paragon Group, and Treadwells, the Knowle Taekwondo would be giving demonstrations, as well as the local JJs Dancing Group. There will of course be prizes for children’s sporting events such as the sack races, and the welly wanging that traditionally make up the carnival. As the theme for this year’s carnival is “Heroes and Villains” the Lions will also be running a fancy dress competition on this theme, with a cash prize of £50 for both the best dressed boy and girl. The competition will be open to children of 11 years and under and originality will score extra points.

“The carnival always has two objectives – to provide a fun filled day for all the family and also to raise money for charity. This year we are raising money for the County Air Ambulance, and it is hoped that the public of Shirley will turn up in their thousands to support this worthwhile cause.” There are still opportunities to provide sponsorship, but there are only a few plots remaining for stallholders, and anyone wanting a stall should contact Lion Martin on 0121 744 4937.
