RESIDENTS are cheering the introduction of a 'booze free zone' in Baxters Green, Shirley.
They were fed up with drunk kids hanging around, making a noise, leaving a mess and generally making the area unsavoury.
So. full marks to them, the police and the council for introducing the ban.
However, the need for the ban points up the fact that alcohol is now well within the pockets of youngsters.
Over and over again it has been pointed out to the drinks industry that alcohol is cheaper, relatively speaking, than it has ever been.
Despite this the industry dodges the issue and denies the link of drink to anti-social behaviour.
It continues to run 'happy hours' in pubs and blames parents for not bringing their children up to respect alcohol.
Meanwhile the supermarkets and offlicences continue to flog booze at bargain prices. The result is bored youngsters with money in their pockets hanging around outside people's houses and causing a nuisance.
It's a vain hope that the drinks industry will start acting responsibly, so let's hope the drinks ban in Baxters Green will be properly policed.
