POLICE sealed off Chelmsley Wood shopping centre on Tuesday after a man with fatal injuries was found in the middle of the complex.
The 41-year-old, who has not been named, was discovered by security staff in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Paramedics were called to the scene and the man was rushed to Heartlands Hospital but later died there from his injuries.
Police were initially treating the death as suspicious but last night confirmed a post-mortem revealed the man’s injuries were consistent with a fall.
DCI Sharon Goosen, from Chelmsley Wood police station, said the man had collapsed outside the Specsavers store and was found just after midnight. He had suffered injuries to the head and face.
“We are keen to trace a man who contacted security staff at the shopping centre that night after finding the victim collapsed. He is believed to be a significant witness,” she said.
Yesterday, police had cordoned off the entire shopping centre and stationed officers at every entrance.
Inside the precinct, forensic teams were combing the area and beyond the police tape, a distinctive crime scene tent had been erected.
It was positioned over the area of pavement where the man had been discovered the previous night.
Shoppers who braved the elements were turned away by police, who had urged the public to keep away from the area.
However, officers expected the shopping centre to re-open on Wednesday.
