Church repairs continue

WORK continues to repair the stonework at St Peter’s, Wootton Wawen - Warwickshire’s oldest church.

WORK continues to repair the stonework at St Peter’s, Wootton Wawen - Warwickshire’s oldest church.

The £150,000 project was given the go-ahead last year, following a major fundraising drive.

St Peter’s is over 1000 years old, dating back to Anglo Saxon times and received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

But now the bells have fallen quiet and the clock stopped at twelve, with scaffolding placed around the ancient tower.

The project was secured by Canon Lawrence Mortimer, who retired as priest in charge last September.

Former policeman and antiques dealer Terry Mason will take over the post at Wootton, Claverdon and Preston Bagot.

The 54-year-old will take over the three parishes, dubbed the Churches of Arden, in June.
