SOLIHULL Council's original John Constable sketch of Malvern Hall was sold at auction on Tuesday for more than £17,000.
Two weeks ago, the council announced plans to sell the artwork in a bid to raise cash to fill a £4 million deficit in its budget.
Constable's sketch was bought by a private owner at Bonham's auctioneers in Knightbridge, London, as the 'star lot' at its sale of 18th and 19th Century Watercolours and Drawings.
The buyer paid £17,400 for the artwork, which fell short of the £20,000 estimated sale price.
The sketch of the Hall - now home to St Martin's School - was commissioned by the then owner, Henry Greswolde during the early 1800s and one of the Hall's paintings now hangs in Tate Britain.
And a copy of the sketch still remains in the civic centre.
