Crowds turn out in force to give town a bright new look

SCORES of people turned out and rolled up their sleeves to give Shirley a spring clean in a packed day organised by the local Town Centre Partnership.

SCORES of people turned out and rolled up their sleeves to give Shirley a spring clean in a packed day organised by the local Town Centre Partnership.

The sun shone too for the “Pride in your Town Day” initiative aimed at focusing local businesses’ attention on Shirley and seeking help and support from volunteers to make improvements to the area.

The park and town centre received a fabulous makeover as the partnership was joined by local environmental champions, residents, the police, young offenders and park rangers with their junior park ranger team.

The youth shelter was painted, the bins along Stratford Road cleaned and new stickers added, the service roads, main shopping area and the entire park perimeter were litter picked and the park furniture and trip rail painted.

“It was a great community effort and everyone worked well together and achieved a significant amount. We’ll be looking to do the event again in the future and would welcome more support!” said Becki Wood, town centre manager.

“Thanks go to the environmental champions and park rangers who supported the initiative and bought all the tools and equipment required,” she added.
