Former Shirley Round Table member Barry Durman will have his hands full in August as he prepares to take on a charity bike ride and get married in the same month.
The 61-year-old, from Earlswood, will be tackling the Birmingham to Paris cycle challenge with a team of five others, covering 420 miles over six days. The event, which will see the team pedal between the two cities, is in aid of three charities - Macmillan, Diabetes UK and Round Table Children’s Wish.
As well as Barry being the oldest in the group, he is also juggling the job of preparing for a wedding with training for the gruelling event.
He will marry his wife to be, Rachel Clarke on August 26 at Tanworth-in-Arden Church - just weeks after completing the trip.
“Rachel is a little bit apprehensive that I may have bitten off more than I can chew but she’s fine - there’s still a few weeks between the bike ride and the wedding,” Barry told us. “I have been training when I can and I have done events like this before. It’s funny how these things always get arranged over a couple of drinks.”
The team, called The Red Windmills (a homage to their final destination), also includes Shirley optician Spencer Parkes, James Thompson, James Gregory, Derek Dolan and Lee McLaughlan. Donations can be made online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/moulinrouge
