Drug addict steals chocolate to feed habit

A SHOPLIFTER has admitted stealing 23 chocolate bars from a Solihull supermarket to feed her drug addiction.

A SHOPLIFTER has admitted stealing 23 chocolate bars from a Solihull supermarket to feed her drug addiction.

Zoe Mallen was confronted by a security guard in Poplar Way, after she was seen placing the bars of Galaxy from Sainsbury’s into her bag on October 19, Solihull Magistrates heard. Malcolm Stoddart, prosecuting, said the 39-year-old had refused to stop but had dropped the bag and made off towards Mell Square where she was later apprehended.

Two Apple TVs from the Solihull Apple store, worth £99 each, were then discovered in her bag.

Mallen of Ryland House, Great Hampton Row, Newtown, pleaded guilty to shoplifting and handling goods.

Mr Stoddart said the defendant, who had tested positive for opiates on arrest, had a lengthy list of previous convictions including 29 matters of theft. The court heard that Mallen, a former drug addict, had relapsed and begun offending again after the death of her partner.

The case was adjourned until December 3 for pre-sentence reports to be prepared.
