A DRUNK driver, who was found with an imitation pistol and police-style baton, has avoided jail.

Police were called out to Bickenhill Parkway at around 5.30pm on July 29, after Richard Powell, of Marlene Croft, Chelmsley Wood, crashed his Peugeot 206 into a lamp post.

A member of the fire service found a bag in the boot with the 8mm starting pistol inside - which Powell claimed was from an old fancy dress party.

The 42-year-old previously pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and an imitation firearm in a public place, as well as drink driving at Solihull Magistrates Court.

On Monday September 24, Powell was sentenced to a 12-week imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.
