A ROYAL visitor dropped in at Birmingham International Airport yesterday to officially open the site’s £50m pier.
HRH The Duke of Kent unveiled a plaque to mark the completion of the structure.
His visit comes 70 years after his mother, Princess Marina, opened the original airport terminal at Elmdon. On arriving at the airport, the Duke was introduced to pupils from nearby Marston Green Junior School. The youngsters have created a time capsule, which contains objects which reflect everyday life. It will be another 70 years before the capsule is opened up again, by which time its creators will be all be drawing a pension.
The new, international pie – which stands three storeys high – is the airport’s biggest investment for 20 years.
