EDITORS from across the region will be firing questions at communities minister Eric Pickles and Lord Hunt in Solihull next week.
The Society of Editors’ Regional Newspapers Conference, held at the Forest of Arden Hotel in Meriden, has invited chairman of The Press Complaints Commission Lord Hunt and MP Eric Pickles to appear at the event.
The Minister is likely to be quizzed on what regional editors see as the completely unfair competition posed by the dozens of council-run free newspapers that go out to ratepayers across the land and BBC local websites.
While Lord Hunt is expected to brief the conference on the latest position relating to the highly controversial replacement of his Commission by a new industry-backed regulator in the wake of the Leveson Inquiry.
Conference organizer Richard Catlow said other issues on the agenda for the event on April 14 and 15, included the potential multimedia role which regional newspapers could play in local TV and whether more daily papers should become weeklies.
