I HAD to rub my eyes in disbelief when I read our Safer Solihull column this week.
165 cases of domestic abuse are reported in the borough every single month - that’s over 40 a week!
When I asked if that was unusual the answer came back, no, it’s about average.
Of course, these are just the ones that are reported - goodness knows how many women - and the majority of victims are women - suffer in silence.
It’s a big step reporting domestic abuse; fear of the consequences can be paralysing, and not only from the violent or abusive partner; fear of losing your home, your children, your status, the good things you’ve worked hard for in life, can all persuade victims to just keep quiet.
We like to think that in the 21st Century we’re a go ahead society based on equality and mutual respect. But for some, beneath that thin veneer of civilisation lies a different beast.
Sometimes enough is enough, don’t suffer in silence, give victim support a call on 0121 745 7400.
