A FORMER drug addict claimed he was stealing a £160 shaver from a local chemist as a Christmas present, a court heard.

A FORMER drug addict claimed he was stealing a £160 shaver from a local chemist as a Christmas present, a court heard.

Allan Topping of Middleton Hall Road, Cotteridge, pleaded guilty to attempting to take a Philips electronic shaver from Boots in Sears Retail Park, in Solihull, on October 3.

Prosecutor Malcolm Stoddart said the 29-year-old was arrested after a staff member saw him placing the razor, worth £160, into a carrier bag in store.

“He told the officer that he had intended to take the razor as a Christmas present for his dad,” Mr Stoddart said. “He tested positive for drugs on his arrest.”

David Whiting, defending, said Topping, who has autism and had suffered a stroke, was trying to turn his life around. “He puts this incident down to a lapse and is upset and annoyed with himself that he has lapsed,” he said.

The case was adjourned until November 9 for pre-sentence reports to be prepared.
