THERE will be lights in Shirley this Christmas following a fantastic response from local people.

Six weeks ago there were concerns that the main illuminations would not go ahead - because of a lack of funding.

But the Shirley Town Centre Partnership began a fierce campaign to get the money and have seen a terrific response from local people.

This week it was announced that £7,000 had been donated to this year’s Christmas Lights Appeal.

Malcolm and Ann Turner, who led the fund raising effort, said that donations were still coming in - but the money raised so far has already guaranteed a “good display”.

“It has been hard work but a very interesting year. We have met some lovely people and enjoyed the challenge,” they said.

A Magic Lantern show at the Shirley Institute, a special raffle and a “Letters to Santa” scheme have all added to this year’s total.

Shirley Christmas Lights have been a festive fixture for 40 years, with an annual campaign to make sure there’s enough money in place.
