THE number of Silhillians on the dole has fallen for the second consecutive month.
Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that the number of people claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance has dropped to 5,332, compared to 5,503 the previous month.
While this number is still way higher than before the recession, the figure suggests that unemployment could have peaked locally.
The biggest rise in those claiming the benefit came when more than 600 extra people signed on between January and February.
Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said: “We still expect unemployment to increase again in the New Year. So we are determined to do more in the West Midlands over the next 18 months.”
