Fitness for free with Star turns

BUDDING sports stars are invited to apply for a year’s free gym access.

BUDDING sports stars are invited to apply for a year’s free gym access.

Solihull Council has 25 places available on its Solihull Talented Athlete Recognition Scheme (Stars), which is open to residents of any age, competing to at least regional level, in any sport.

The scheme gives free access to Tudor Grange and North Solihull Leisure Centres.

One of last year’s Stars Madelaine Smith, aged 16, is among the top three UK sprint hurdlers for her age group.

She said: “I train four times a week at the track so not having to pay for it is a big help.

“I’ve also just been injured so I’ve been using the pool quite a lot to help my recovery.”

Fifteen-year-old Jack Rose is a goalkeeper for West Bromwich Albion’s under 16s team and last October made his England under 16s debut against Wales.

He said: “When I was snowed in and couldn’t get to training I was able to use the gym to stay fit. I’d recommend Stars to anyone - the facilities are great.”

The deadline for applications is April 1. For more visit www.solihullactive.co.uk/stars.
