Former drug addict stole to pay drug debts

A SERIAL shoplifter who attempted to steal almost £100 of clothes from a Touchwood store has been jailed for six weeks.

A SERIAL shoplifter who attempted to steal almost £100 of clothes from a Touchwood store has been jailed for six weeks.

Police were called to Gap on October 10 after the store manager became suspicious of the items which Scott Tandy, of Samson Road, Sparkbrook, was taking into the changing rooms, said prosecutor Malcolm Stoddart.

The 32-year-old, who had 26 previous thefts on his record, was arrested and found to have a Gap scarf and shirts tied round his waist worth £93.80.

Mary Clarke, defending, said former drug addict Tandy, who pleaded guilty to shoplifting, had stolen to pay off his old drug debts.

She said her client was asking for help and appealed to the Bench to adjourn for probation reports to be prepared.

However magistrates refused and jailed Tandy.
