A POSTER designed by Solihull artist Susan Bassett is being displayed at railway stations on the Chiltern line between Leamington and London.
Hers was the winning entry in a competition organised by Chiltern Railways and Leamington Studio Artists, of which she is a member.
The challenge was to produce an art deco-style poster bearing the slogan “Leamington artists go to London by Chiltern Railways”, and Susan was inspired by the work of 19th century French painter Paul Cezanne.
She said: “I decided that my poster woulld show two people travelling through a landscape similar to the Chiltern Hills to visit an exhibition at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.
“To add an extra twist, I wanted my travellers to be recognisable characters from a famous painting. I found my passengers in Cezanne’s The Card Players and my landscape in his Mont Sainte Victoire.
“I hope Monsieur Cezanne does not mind his aqueduct becoming a viaduct for the Chiltern shuttle!”
All the entries can be seen at the artists’ website www.lsa-artists.co.uk.
