ANXIOUS Smith’s Wood residents were celebrating last night after the council saved a much-loved area of green space on Windward Way.

The planning committee rejected an application from Bellway Homes that would have seen 18 new two and three-bedroom houses and 16 flats wipe out the open space.

For months councillor Mike Sheriden and Smith’s Wood campaigner Jane Holt have worked closely with residents at the Green Party to save the land described as a ‘green lung’ and also known as Woodlands Green.

And to their joy councillors sided with them despite a recommendation for approval by local planning officers.
