DO readers share my frustration when telephoning any of the public service companies and having to press button 'so and so' to speak to 'so and so'.

In my experience it takes several moments of trying to reach the department one wishes to be connected to, only to be informed that "all lines are busy but we are aware of your call."

Then it starts - the 'music', lasting about 30 seconds, and again "we are etc etc." The fact that I am being charged for every minute of this pantomime does not improve my temper, but it also makes me think of the time when one dialled a number, asked to speak to Mr Blank and was connected in a matter of seconds.

Is this progress, or am I just a grumpy old man?
