Malcolm Harbour, the Solihull-based West Midlands Conservative MEP, raised the alarm over a business scam.
He warned West Midlands businesses that an official-looking letter from a German company asking for a form to be completed to include their VAT registration number was a scam and could cost companies up to £3000.00.
Mr Harbour said: “The misleading advertising, which seems to bounce from one subject to another, and from country to country, needs to be stopped.
“ This will only happen by speedier action and information sharing between member states. The unscrupulous companies will continue to deceive businesses and individuals alike as long as they are allowed to get away with it.”
