A PENSIONER, who lost his own father in a drink driving smash, has been given an 18 month ban for crashing into another driver whilst double the legal limit.
Roger Ball, of Lugtrout Lane, Catherine-de-Barnes, had lost control of his Ford Focus in Cornyx Lane on December 14, while returning home with his wife from a boozy meal, a court heard.
The 69 year-old said he had swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, and gone straight into a Skoda.
He told officers he had drunk four glasses of wine before getting behind the wheel, and was found to be more than twice the legal limit when breathalysed.
The retired JLR worker said this was his first offence in 46 years of driving.
"I'm really sorry for the anguish and inconvenience caused to the driver of the other car and to my wife.
"I also need to thank the police who made sure my wife got home safely after the incident.
"This is massively out of character for me."
Ball was banned from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay £470 in fines and costs.
