THE intended target of a gunman who mistakenly killed a father-of-two was not even in the Sheldon pub where the execution-style killing took place, an insider has claimed.

Instead he was miles away drinking with friends on the other side of the city.

West Midlands Police have since placed the man in protective custody while the search for the killer continues.

Marlon O’Reilly was shot on his 34th birthday earlier this month, while drinking with a pal at the Dovecote pub.

Detectives later said they were investigating whether Mr O’Reilly was gunned down mistakenly because he was wearing a similar T-shirt to the intended target.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “A line of enquiry remains that Marlon was a victim of mistaken identity.

“Inquiries are ongoing as to whether the intended victim of the shooting was also in the pub at the same time. Police have put safeguarding measures into place around a number of people.”

The father-of-two’s cousin, Hayley O’Reilly, last week appealed for anyone with information to come forward, describing the “devastating” impact Marlon’s death had had on the family.
