THE director of a local veterinary practice has been named most inspirational businesswoman of the year.
Elly Pittaway joined celebrity winners Moira Stewart and Cath Kidston, to collect the Demeter Award, for female entrepreneurs aged 26 to 35, at the glamorous NatWest Everywoman Awards ceremony in London last week.
The 34-year-old vet, who lives in Coventry, took over a veterinary surgery franchise three years ago and has since grown Broadlane Vets and Radford Road Vets, both in Coventry, and created the new Balsall Common Vets surgery in Solihull.
Ive known I wanted to be a vet since I was eight but since I hit my mid-late twenties I was thinking about what I wanted to do next.
When the opportunity arose, I had to take it.
I took on a massive business loan just as the country tipped into the recession. It was a big worry but its only when you take a big risk you get real payback.
Since taking over the franchise, Elly has created new services such as puppy parties for new owners, weightwatchers for dogs and cats and alternative therapies like acupuncture.
Weve pulled it into the 21st century, she added.
Elly was nominated for the award by her NatWest bank manager and said she was in complete shock when she won.
They had to push me out the chair, she joked.
I just take it as recognition of what weve achieved so far and we will achieve in future.
