WING-WALKER extraordinaire Tom Lackey paid a flying visit to Chelmsley Wood on Monday to open the town centre’s new Asda store.
The grand opening of the cornerstone of the town centre redevelopment prompted a celebration party featuring a performance from Britain’s Got Talent star Shaun Smith.
Shaun entertained the crowd from 9:30am with a selection of the family favourite songs, including Bill Wither’s Ain’t No Sunshine, that made him such a popular figure on the show.
Tom, aged 89, whose many wing-walks have raised thousands of pounds for numerous charities and good causes, was chosen to perform the grand opening after a search was launched for a local hero in the Solihull Times.
The opening of the Asda store marks a major milestone in a Solihull Council project to improve Chelmsley Wood town centre.
The new town centre already has new public toilets and a new bus interchange to make getting in and out of the centre much easier. Work is also nearing completion for a brand new library and Connect walk in service, where people can go for any Council related queries from Housing Benefit, to Council Tax and Blue Badges. The new library and Connect service will be opening in the Autumn.
Leader of the council, Cllr Ken Meeson said: “We believe that residents of Chelmsley Wood and the surrounding area deserve excellent shopping facilities. It is pleasing to see this Asda store opening and our plans to rejuvenate the town centre becoming a reality for local people.”
The new store will offer a full range of food and other merchandise including a fresh fish counter, rotisserie, bakery, pizza counter, customer café, pharmacy, George clothing and homeware items.
