Jack a champ in debut year

BOXING Solihull schoolboy Jack Monaghan has been crowned a Midlands champion.

BOXING Solihull schoolboy Jack Monaghan has been crowned a Midlands champion.

The 14-year-old, from Colesbourne Road, claimed the Midlands title in the Schoolboy Three Nation Championships, for 11-15 year olds after beating contender Humzah Saeed in the champion fight last week.

Trainer Paddy Benson, of Pat Benson Boxing Academy in Digbeth, said: “It’s a great achievement, especially for his first year.

“This club has produced champions over a number of years and I think he has a good chance to go on and win the national title”

His mum Lisa Monaghan said Jack had “boxing in the blood” after his great grandfather Alfie Barr had won amateur national and international titles.

“He’s following in his footsteps,” she added. “I’m sure his great grandad would be proud.

“Jack’s done so well and worked so hard it’s really nice for him to get some recognition. It’s a huge achievement.

“It’s nice to hear a good story about a young person.”

Now Jack, who trains everyday, is preparing to go to Manchester on Sunday to take on boxers from across the UK in the battle for the national Schoolboy Three Nation Championships title.

“I feel confident for the fight,” he said.
